A vernier caliper is easy to use, quick and simple to operate. However it has an accuracy limited by the vernier scale, readings are dependent on operator ability both in terms of eyesight and the force and feel in judging when to stop closing the jaws.
Generally speaking verniers are cheap and are something that everyone in a workshop can have individually whereas the more accurate micrometers are issued from a central store when required.

Vernier Caliper
Physics Vernier Caliper, how do i get diameter, radius and thickness of the M&M?
I have pictures of a pile of M&Ms in the middle of a Vernier caliper. How would I get the radius, thickness of the m&m, and the diameter. the vernier is in mm units, and i need to convert it to cm. How would i do that?
How would I get the thickness?
Read the reading then divide by 10 to get it in cm
