You could have loose connection in the dash. Also not starting may indicate something as simple as the gear shifter not being in exactly the correct position, try jingling it up and down to see if it clicks into to place.
I own an older taurus and have had the same not starting problem, also the dash light/dome light switch is a bit touchy causing the dash lights to flicker if not in the perfect spot.
